Proposed Classification for Acer
Proposed Classifications of Acer
Many classifications of Acer have been proposed – e.g. Pax (1885 and others ), Rehder (1905), Pojárkova (1933), Fang (1939), Momotani (1961, 1962), Ogata (1967), Murray (1970), de Jong (1976) and Delendick (1981) – prior to de Jong’s widely accepted classification in Maples of the World (1994) and subsequent revision (2002).
We present a summary of current classification proposals, beginning with de Jong’s update of his 1994 classification, through a summary of Crowley’s classification for the International Dendrology Society.
Note that the International Maple Society does not endorse or support any classification or work associated with compiling, summarizing or proposing of such classifications. Any classification of the genus found on the International Maple Society website, or associated with the International Maple Society, does not represent the views of the International Maple Society, the Taxonomic Working Group, or any of the respective members of these organizations.
